The Speakers of the House:
The American and Other Alien Dreams

The Speakers of the House is the realization of 99 imagined possible versions of one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s lesser known speeches -- “The American Dream”. In this speech, Martin Luther King Jr. articulates the intertwined problems of race, class and labor.

Based on 7 years of ongoing research, The Speakers of the House will try to imagine a full range of other planetary dreams -- ones that account for new, alien ideas and forms of equality . The Floating Lab will collaborate with 99 poets, scholars, philosophers and thinkers to imaginatively extend Martin Luther King Jr’s. unfinished project of dreaming other possibilities.

These texts will be performed in the public space of D.C. by 99 vocal artists - singers, rappers, poets, rhetoricians, fortune-tellers. The performances will be located in a recreation of the ‘rostrum’ -- the Congressional architecture that hosts the Speaker of the House.
